There are over 149 million people aged 16 or older in the United States Labor force. Among the nations workers are 69.1 million women!
The first Labor Day celebrations took place in New York City in 1882. Twelve years later in 1894, Congress designated Labor Day a Federal Holiday. 117 years later, men and women across the nation are still being celebrated for their hard work, dedication and commitment to their labor force.
According to the Department of Labor, Labor Day is “a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers… It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.”Labor Day is usually celebrated with BBQ’s and picnics. Be safe! Labor Day is one of the year’s biggest DWI/DUI weekends. Law enforcement officers across New York and the entire nation will be on the lookout for people driving while intoxicated or under the influence.
More than 500 local law enforcement agencies and State Police are conducting saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints all weekend long as part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. This focused effort is aiming to get drunk drivers off the road through a combination of high-visibility enforcement and public awareness messaging.
So, Happy Labor Day to all the working men, and especially all the working women in America’s labor force. Be safe and enjoy the holiday weekend!
