Are you looking to get more from you workout? A few pointers can help you get a better workout in a shorter amount of time. Take advantage of these tips from the October issue of Women’s Health to bring your cycling workout to the next level.
- Resist the urge to put your head down when you start to get tired. Doing so can slow down your oxygen intake, tiring you out even faster. Keep your head up, looking forward, inhaling and exhaling.
- Always maintain a flat-back while riding and avoid rocking from side-to-side. Keeping your upper body still (but relaxed) and elbows relaxed and bent will help absorb shock when you hit a bump and reduce strain on your body.
- Sitting is the most efficient way to ride because you use up to 10% more energy when you’re standing or leaning forward. But, if you’re looking to burn some extra calories and get more out of the cycle, like on a monster hill, get out of the saddle! When you stand, all of your body weight pushes down on the pedals, giving each stroke more oomph. When you stand, shift into a harder gear so your legs don’t spin too quickly, rise up and keep your but over the seat.
