October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.
In 2011, it is estimates that there will be 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed to US women. That includes new cases of primary breast cancer among survivors, but not recurrence of original breast cancer among survivors (Susan G. Komen).
57,650 new cases of “in situ” breast cancer will be diagnosed to US women, which includes ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS). Of those 57,650 women, about 85% will be DCIS (Susan G. Komen).
In 2011, there will be an estimated 39,520 breast cancer deaths. That’s equivalent to filling Citi Field just shy of its maximum capacity.
All women are at risk for breast cancer. The two most important risk factors are being female, and getting older. As you age, your risk increases. The majority of breast cancer deaths occur in women aged 50 and older.
Early detection and effective treatment offer the best defense against breast cancer mortality. No matter how old you are, you should be familiar with your breasts and how they look and feel. If you notice any changes at all, schedule an appointment at the NuHealth Women’s Care facilities right away!
