Florence Nightingale defined nursing as having “charge of the personal health of somebody… and what nursing has to do… is to put the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon him,” (ANA). Virginia Henderson went on to describe the practice, “Nurses help people, sick or well, to do those things needed for health or a peaceful death that people would do on their own if they had the strength, will or knowledge,” (ANA).

By definition, Nursing is the protection, promotion and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities and populations (ANA).

Nurses make up the nation’s largest health care profession. Each nurse follows a distinct path of education to become a registered nurse (RN). From the basic education required of an RN to the advanced educational and clinical paths taken by more experienced nurses, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting different health care needs of the population (ANA).

NuHealth’s Department of Nursing is committed to a robust continuing education program that helps nursing professionals at all levels improve patient care, enhance their careers and rise to the challenge of a busy public hospital.
